Ceiling fan too fast – can I use a remote control kit to slow it down?

I have a Harbor Breeze ceiling fan in my bedroom. Normal pull chain fan + light. The entire unit is controlled by a single switch at the entrance of the room. Unfortunately, it moves too much air, even on low, for me to sleep.

I was thinking that I could reduce the speed of the fan by setting it to medium or low, and installing a ceiling fan remote control kit like this one:

This kit (and similar ones) tell you to put the ceiling fan pull chains on high, then let the switch control the speed. I think that if I put the pull chain on medium (or low), it will make all of the new fan speeds slower. So at least the new low should be slow enough.

Will this work, is this safe, and has anybody else done this?

Just set your pull chain to high, then use the remote to adjust the speed. It should make the fan slower than the factory low setting. As long as you follow the instructions, it should be safe. Just keep an eye out for any unusual noises or issues after installation, and you should be good to go.
