Ceiling fan remote

I moved into a house a couple months ago and the ceiling fans/light all are connected by remotes. I can’t find the remote for one fan but I’m pretty sure there’s already a receiver in the fan. So can I just buy a universal remote and pair it to the existing receiver or do I need to install a new receiver?

You can probably do this, but you’ll likely also need to open up the ceiling fan box to get to the current receiver. Most ceiling fans use a 4 position dip switch setup to keep the remotes from activating the wrong ceiling fan. You can guess by going through all 16 possible positions, but it’s often easier to look. Therefore, I suggest you just buy a remote + receiver kit.
